ABOUT US

We are a group of people coordinating activities to foster collaboration across disciplines using AI as a common tool.

The headquarters is at the Institute for Corpuscular Physics (IFIC), Valencia, where most of the activities of this platform are planned to be hosted.

IFIC

IFIC (Instituto de Física Corpuscular) is a joint center made up by CSIC and University of Valencia. It is a leader in theoretical and experimental research in particle physics, astroparticles and nuclear physics.

IFIC is a pioneer in the experimental research on matter constituents in Spain. It is nationally and internationally recognized as a benchmark of excellence for its scientific contributions, impact on society and its ability to attract talent.

IFIC is involved in the design, construction and operation of large scientific instruments, which are used in the most advanced research activities carried out in the world of physics. Likewise, IFIC has played a relevant role in the international scientific experiments, which have led to the most relevant discoveries made in recent years (Higgs boson, among others).

IFIC’s Medical Physics and Advanced Computing groups stand out for their innovative developments in medical imaging and their recognized abilities and contributions in artificial intelligence and related technologies.
IFIC’s data processing center is Tier II node of ATLAS experiment. It also hosts and manages ARTEMISA, an advanced computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence. These remarkable capabilities are available for collaboration with external users who need them for their research.

I am a particle physics researcher at CSIC with expertise including detector development and operation (hardware), computing (programming, distributed analysis) and physics analysis. I have performed studies looking Dark Matter and new physics with advanced statistical and multivariate techniques applied to large datasets from collisions of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

In recent years, the will to apply my knowledge from particle physics to other areas has taken me to study and apply Machine Learning techniques to different scientific fields.

I’m a Professor of Physics at the University of Sussex (UK), and currently on leave as a Senior Distinguished Researcher at University of Valencia. My fundamental research is on Particle Physics, and my aim is to answer questions such as the genesis of our Universe, and what is it made of. To pursue these research goals, theoretical (mathematical) models need to be developed and contrasted with Nature’s behaviour in experiments. This comparison often involves the use of sophisticated numerical techniques, such as Deep Learning (to extract features in complex environments) and Bayesian analyses (to assign probabilities to different hypothesis).

I am currently pursuing various applications of Machine Learning techniques, including the use of Deep Learning for Symmetry and Anomaly detection in Physics. I am also working on a number of multidisciplinary projects with Artificial Intelligence as the focal point. These projects are in the areas of Climate Change, Fairness and Politics, Ecology, and risk prevention from Seismicity and Space Weather.

I’m a theoretical physicist with a strong interest in statistics and machine learning (ML), which represent the main topics of my research in the last four years.

I’ve been focused on non-parametric probabilistic ML models as well as Bayesian Inference in general, in order to: 1) design new statistical methods, and 2) apply them to solve problems in physics and other areas. I’ve been lately interested in Quantum Computing and Quantum ML.
I give courses at PhD level on all these research lines on a yearly basis.
